Karaoke and hip hop are two things I didn’t expect to go together. But the hip hop karaoke night at the social every Thursday somehow makes it work. Don’t expect a whining version of Dancing Queen from people who have had far too many vodka cokes. Instead get ready to be amazed as stylish regulars rap their way through hip hop favourites like 50 Cent, Kanye West and Missy Elliot.
Free all night, hip hop karaoke is ideal if you want an alternative to the typical student night on a Thursday. The event attracts a diverse crowd of trendy young people with a soft spot for dropping it like it’s hot.
If you’re feeling brave put your name on the list and choose your song. The sarcastic host in the gold jacket and black thick rimmed glasses will call your name, ask for a rapturous applause (sometimes containing people smashing their hands against the metal wall), hand you a mic and coax you into the lime light of a crowded rectangular room.
If you’re lucky people will sing along, cheer and dance. If you’re not so, a horn will sound and there’ll be some boos. Hip hop karaoke is not for the faint hearted. Potential rappers line the stage dancing, whooping and singing the words along with you. You have a big impression to make. Though you do get a free beer for your efforts.
I hope this gets you in the mood:
